Okay. Now i've finally got organised, and I've got a bit more of an idea of what i'm going to be up to for the next few weeks.

I've just booked a ticket from London to Edinburgh for the 25th, and organised a booking on the MacBackpackers Jump-on Jump-off bus, so i can wander around Scotland at leisure. I've also booked a ticket from Glasgow to Rome on September 11 to meet up with Old Matt.

After that, its onto the wandering through Italy (especially Tuscany) for a while...

Well, I've arrived in England now, and i'm currently recuperating at Paul and Lyds house...

I spent a few days in Kuala Lumpur, well, it was interesting, but not that exciting. A few things went wrong, which put a dint in the whole plan...

  • I booked into a hostel, so i could get the benefits of the hostel thang - common area to meet other travellers, and breakfast... However, the taxi driver couldn't find the hostel, and had never heard it. He dropped me near where the hostel was supposed to be, and i wandered up and down the street, trying to find it for a while (with a backpack on - not fun). No-one had ever heard of it. I went to the tourist information centre - they gave me a map, and circled where it was (completely different area to where the taxi driver had dropped me), so, i went up there. Still couldn't find it. After about 4 hours of trying to find this place, gave up, and went to a hotel. Only problem was, i was stuck by myself, and didn't have the breakfast. Oh, and had to pay a lot more than i would've at the backpackers. Not a good start to the whole travel thing.
  • Went to the Petronas towers - tallest towers in the world (i think), but they wouldn't let me go up them - they only had a limited number of tickets, and they'd already given them out. Doh.
  • The scales at the KL airport are very out. My bags weighed 36kg at melbourne (and the lady was nice enough not to charge me for it), but at KL, they weighed 41kg - and they wanted to charge me for the excess. Only $500 or so. Wasn't impressed. So, had to go and get some of it sent by unaccompanied baggage - still cost about $200. Not happy. At this point, was kinda regretting going to KL - it cost a lot more than i was planning. Also, means i have to go back out to Heathrow to pick up the bag later.

Anyway, time for some good points about the whole KL thing.

Umm... Well, it was hot and humid. Thats not a good thing though. Other than that, i went and visited the night market - lots of dodgy dvd's, t-shirts, watches, and shoes. Nothing that really grabbed me as exciting. I ate out at a street restarant at the market - quite nice actually. I went up the second tallest tower in KL - couldn't go the tallest, so i went the second tallest :D. Got a few photos, but all-in-all, KL wasn't that exciting. Kinda interesting, but nothing exciting. i'll put a few photos up at some point soon.

Oh, and saw a travel book on the trans-siberian railway - another one to add to the list of places i want to go... Four weeks travelling from Moscow to Vladivostok - could be very interesting. Just have to convince someone else it will be fun...

Anyway, as i said earlier, i'm now in England, and we're just about to head into London - there's a show on at Trafalger Square. Not sure what it is, but it should be good. After that, we're going to head over and check out a west end show. Always wanted to do that.

Just thinking that i should put down roughly what my plans are for the next few weeks, as i start my life as an unemployed bum, and wander the world, until i get bored, and the money runs out...

Anyway:

  • Tuesday 17th August, 12.15am - fly out of Melbourne
  • Tuesday 17th August, 6am-ish - arrive KL, bum around for a few days, check out the city... (I've always thought it stupid to have a stop-over somewhere, and just sit in the airport - you're in the country, so why not check it out...
  • Thursday 19th August, 12pm-ish - fly KL to London
  • Thursday 19th August, 6pm-ish - arrive london, heathrow... yay!
  • Friday - recuperate, while sponging of my buddies, Paul and Lydia...

After that:

  • Celebrate my birthday (the 24th of August) in another country :D
  • Head up to Glasgow at the start of sept, and get the proper tour of the place with my buddy Lindsay
  • Head over to Italy around mid sept, and bum around Tuscany with Matt - then head north towards Amsterdam, where Matts got a 'business meeting' - or so he says...
  • After that - who knows

Longer term:

  • Go sailing around the Mediterranean for a while (theres a few web sites that hook up boat owners, and people who are willing to work for nothing, so everyone wins...) So, a few months of that, ahhh... life will be hard...
  • Check out a white Christmas... Always wanted one of them...
  • Wander lots and lots and lots... Really got to improve that map of visited countries - its looking kinda bare at the moment.
    • Russia is up there on the list of places to vist.
    • France - will probably hang out there for a while
    • Skiing in the Swiss Alps - ahh - life is going to be sooo hard...
    • And well - i'll see where i end up
  • When the money finally runs out, i'll think about getting a job. Either that, or i'll start robbing banks. Not sure which one yet.

This is that always dodgy first post, where people feel they have to have something there, but dont actually have anything to put there yet... So, this isn't going to be that deep...

Anyway, this blog is going to be a replacement for those group emails that some people like, and some people absolutely loath. (I belong firmly in the latter category). So, I'll put my ramblings here, and if people are interested in reading them - well, they can come here and read them.

For those that aren't quite technically minded, and haven't done the blog reading thing before, you have a few options as to how to read a blog:

  • come visit the site regularly, and see if theres anything new to read
  • download a feed reader (aka news aggregator), and let it check automatically for new stuff
    • if you want to give this a go, i'd suggest awasu as a really cool standalone program
    • if you use outlook, check out newsgator as a really cool outlook addin (news items appear as emails).

Anyway, thats enough babbling for now - all i've got to do is send out an email saying that its here! Yay!.
