Found the other day that my new housemate Cath has the same birthday as me... Freaky!

I be thinking that my our birthday this year could be a bit rowdy :).

[edit: added the pictures]

Got very excited yesterday - it snowed properly for the first time!

Was at work when it first snowed, but that didn't count, cos I was stuck inside. But, went home, and when I got off the tube, it was snowing properly :). Such a cool thing - but I'm sure in a week or so, I'll be thoroughly annoyed at it. Got home, grabbed the camera, and headed back out to take some photos so you can share the excitement... :) It was so exciting - I felt like a kid. I'm sure anyone who saw me taking photos thought I was an absolute idiot, but who cares. Cath, one of my new housemates, had a bit of a laugh at me too... :)

Felt that I should get involved in this political thing for a bit:

The Committee to Protect Bloggers has announced today (Feb 22nd)  as Free Arash and Mojtaba Day.

Free Mojtaba and Arash Banner

These guys have been imprisioned by the Iranian Authorities for speaking out against a crackdown on the free press.

I just sent off a letter to the Iranian Ambassador to Australia, adding my voice - if you feel strongly enough about this, feel free to do the same. The Free Arash and Mojtaba Day page has suggestions on how to do something.

We're not insane; the people who hear voices are the insane ones... The smurfs tell us what to do...

(from a conversation with Biscuit...)

Yay!

After looking for what seems like an eternity, but which more likely would be about 2 months,  I've finally managed to get myself a contract.

As of Tuesday morning, I'll be starting as a Senior Software Developer, with the following job description:

Software Developers required for 3 month contract. On-going development and maintenance of one of Europe's most popular Merger and Acquisition products. Recently launched in the US we require Senior Developers with 5+ years experience designing, developing, deploying and maintaining high-volume Websites globally. Team player is essential. Our current environment/requirement is ASP, VBScript, JavaScript, HTML/DHTML, SQL Server 2000 clustered) and XML/XSLT running on a load balanced Windows 2000 cluster. An essential part of our strategy is the phasing-in and migration to the .NET framework and therefore candidates with experience of VS.NET, ASP.NET, C#, VB.NET and XML Web Services would be desirable. Others skills should include Regular Expressions, XPath, COM, COM+, SQL Server: T-SQL, SPs, UDFs, DTS Packages; XDRs and XSDs, SOAP, ADO and ADO.NET, MS Source Safe, MS Office 2000.

Damn, thats a lot of acronyms... The scary thing is that I know a fair bit about nearly all of them... And the ones that I don't know, they're fairly easy to figure out... I hope :).

Its all kind of odd. I haven't actually met anyone from the company yet, but I'm starting on Tuesday. I've spoken to the manager (Mark) a few times, and they got me to do 4 BrainBench tests (ouch), which apparently I aced. When/if I get my hands on the results, I'll post them up here (mainly so that I can massage the ego a bit more :)). I asked if they wanted me to come in for a chat to actually meet each other, but, apparently not - I start on Tuesday, on a 4 day, paid interview :). Kind of odd, but who cares. Hopefully I'll get along with the people I'm supposed to be working with :).

Only problem is that I start on Tuesday morning, 9am. I mean, whose alive at that time of day? Whats worse is that I'll have just come back from Rotterdam, having spent all weekend partying. Hopefully I'll be able to stay awake, and actually pay attention on the day... Even worse is how long it'll take me to get from where I'm living (still Crawley - yes Paul, I will move out soon, I promise!) - about an hour and a half or so. Thats a big incentive to get moving on the place to live thing.

Oh, on the place to live thing - now that I've got a job, I emailed the last place that I liked (but didn't get because I didn't have a job), and told them the good news. Apparently the room is still available, so maybe I'll have a better chance this time :). Otherwise, I'll have to keep looking. I did manage to find a better place to look for places to live - MoveFlat.com - much better than Gumtree.com.

Looking through a friend from Canada's pics, and as I got up to the Florence pics, I saw this and got a little scared. So, I just thought i'd share the scare, as it were...

Scary, huh?

Oh, and that big Heineken thing next to me, is one of the Magical Beer Rockets - its got its own tap on the front of it, to pour your own beers. We went through about 3 or 4 of them that night... :)

Random thoughts on the way to an interview:

  • Nervous, but not really. I know I can do what they want me to, but its just a case of convincing them that I can.
  • Wish my resume had some more pure dev roles on it. Last proper role (infosys) wasn't so good for a resume filler.
  • Just need to get a role that I can say 'did lots of analysis and dev stuff with .net'. That'd make getting another contract easier.
  • This is only a 2 month contract. Would be better if it was longer.
  • If I get it, not sure whether to accept it or not. I've had lots of promising phone calls this week, but this is the first interview I've had in a while. So, do I hang about, waiting for something better, or what?
  • I s'pose, I just answered my own question - I can’t hang around waiting for something better all the time. I've got a hang of how to do the whole contracting roles now, so it'll be much easier next time.
  • Also, this role is one where it may be extended anyway, so its a moot point.
  • I could be asking all these questions a bit prematurely though. Haven't had the interview yet. But I s'pose I have to consider the question anyway, seeing they want someone to start tomorrow. I s'pose I'll just see how it goes.
  • I wonder how they're going to take it when I tell them that I can’t be there on Monday (I'll be in rotterdam)
  • Hmmm... I wonder how I can improve my skills in vb.net to fare better in technical interviews?
  • Hmmm... Wonder if it'd be easier to just rob a bank or something, and travel round. I win all ways then. I get the money I need, I don’t have to work, and I get to travel for six months or so. Sweet!
  • 10 minutes till interview. Hmmm... Maybe some dutch courage would have helped here...
  • The problem is, I think, I can do it, I just have trouble convincing people of this fact...
  • Hmmm... Time to go to the interview I think.

Random thoughts after an interview:

  • Think I did fairly well.
  • Wasn't super technical, but the level they asked at was a good level for me to answer at. Wasn't too technical - no specific detailed questions, just high level stuff.
  • Think i managed to convince them i knew what i was talking about, and the history I had was suited to what they were doing.
  • Odd thing was that i got a phone call from another agent telling me about a role with the same company, same technology, same length of time, but apparently different contact at the company. Not sure whats going on. agents going to try and find out, and get back to me...

PS - found out at the end of the day that I didn't get the contract. Apparently, there wasn't any negative feedback, but the other candidate was a slightly better fit for what they wanted. Not necessarily a bad thing, cos it means that I can now have one of the longer contracts :). Hopefully.

I thought I'd actually sit down and share a little bit about what I've been doing lately, as I haven't been posting much real stuff - just funnies and odd stuff that I've felt the need to share.

So, here goes:

I'm still living in Crawley, on Paul & Lydia's loungeroom floor, which, as I'm sure you can guess, is getting a little bit old. And I'm sure that Paul & Lydia are more than getting sick of me being here. So, I've been looking pretty seriously to find a place to live, but so far not having much luck. I have managed to find a couple of places where I liked the house, and liked the people there, but the first never got back to me, and the second, the landlord didn't want an unemployed bum living there. So, I'm still on the lookout for somewhere to live - which is damn annoying, checking the gumtree site everyday, and trying to read between the lines to find a decent place. Big problem is how picky I am - I'm sure I could've found somewhere pretty damn quick, but, well, you've got to have some standards. And given the general standard of London housing, well... Annoying thing is how much it costs to get up to London from here - about £13. So, going up to check out a house is kinda painful on the wallet.

And, I'm also still looking for work, which is very very annoying. I've had lots of chats with recruitment agents, a lot of which have sounded very promising (and a few that couldn't be bothered giving me the time of day (I don't get it either...)), but none seem to be going anywhere. I'm just keeping looking at the job websites (JobServe, JobSite, CWJobs, Monster, etc), and ringing agents about the jobs and applying. Its just the waiting, waiting, waiting game... Yay. Hopefully something will come through soon. I think the whole start of the year thing has a bit to do with it - Jan is usually a bad time of the year to look for contracts.

So, doing both of these things at the same time is A Bad ThingTM. Kinda depressing, really, when they don't go anywhere. I'm sort of hoping that they'll come through together - otherwise, I'll be living in a strange house, spending most of my time there, without a job to go to. At least, if I have a job, it wont be so odd living with complete strangers.

Other than those two terribly exciting things, there's not a lot happening. We went out for Biscuit's birthday on Saturday - the Monopoly Board Pub Crawl (Part One). But, that is a topic for another post. Oh, and next weekend, we're heading over to Rotterdam for a weekend of partying with Margo. Should be a great time (albeit one that takes about a week to recover from - hope I don't have any interviews, or have to start work the following day).

And a final side note - I just started writing down a list of goals and ambitions, places I want to go, and all that guff, as a vague attempt to get somewhere in this little thing called life. I may (or may not), actually get around to posting it here at some point. Maybe.

For some odd reason, I was just talking to Biscuit on Skype about the man from St Ives, you know, the one from the riddle:

As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives.
The seven wives had seven sacks,
The seven sacks had seven cats,
The seven cats had seven kits.
Kits, cats, sacks, wives -
How many were going to St. Ives?

And I couldn't remember the riddle, so I looked it up. And, I found that there's a pub, in St Ives, called Seven Wives.

I dont know about you, but I think that's kinda cool. Maybe its just me... :)
